Coon Shackle #1 Application Instructions
Bait Types
- Any commercially available paste bait will work fine as will your homemade recipes. Some techniques we recommend are to chunk fish into 3/4” pieces and push them onto the trigger. Items that do not spear well can be put behind the trigger.
- Note: When trapping in an area with risk of domestic cat catches we recommend using a marshmallow on the trigger as cats tend to not have a sweet tooth unless quite hungry. (no guarantees)
- The “COON SHACKLE” bait choice is limited only by your imagination.
Bait Installation
- Grasp trap from rear in either hand and with same hand index finger pull trigger to the rear of the trap, this pivots the pointed end forward inside the tube. Place bait from open end of trap onto pointed end of trigger or in the case of paste bait place below trigger. Take care not to use an excessive amount of bait (more is not always better)leave room around sides of trigger for coon to get behind trigger and move trigger forward to firing position. The trigger must have some free motion after installing bait in order to properly fire. CAUTION: MAKE SURE TRAP IS NOT SET!!!
Setting Trap
- Grasp trap from the rear in either hand depending on which hand bias you are, place trap on your thigh or ground. Take the setting bar and place over the Torsion spring andlatch ends under the trigger pivot pin. Push downward and engage linkage with notch in trigger.
Placement of Trap
Stabilator Wire Anchor System:The purpose of the Stabilator Anchor System is to stabilize the trap so the coon can work the trigger allowing for a clean secure catch. It also prevents the trap from being knocked over by untargeted animals such as dogs and or coyotes.
- Dry Earth or Hard Clay: Simply push the Stabilator wire into the ground until the base of the trap is flush. It may not be necessary to use the Twist Lock function if the ground is hard, this option works best in soft earth or clay. Then use rebar stakes or pull proof stakes. Do not lengthen stock chain on trap as the additional length can allow coon to hit with enough momentum to injure itself.
- Soft Earth: Simply push the Stabilator into the ground until the base of the trap is flush Twist a 1/4 turn and your are stabilized.
- Water Sets: Drowning sets are always a best option. We recommend slide wire or cable. In non-drowning situations, use the stock chain set up.
- Rocks and Logs:The COON SHACKLE can be used in cracks in logs and rocks just push the trap securely into the crack an firmly wedge in place.
- When making coon sets with the COON SHACKLE be sure to remove any debris around the set area. This prevents the raccoon from grasping objects and pulling itself free or binding up the swivels.
Special Notes and Warnings
- DO NOT DRYFIRE THE COON SHACKLE UNLOAD THE SPRING MANUALLY.
- DO NOT HAMMER ON THE COON SHACKLE TO FORCE THE STABILATOR INTO THE GROUND.
- IF SHACKLE IS FROZEN INTO GROUND DO NOT BEAT WITH HAMMER TO LOOSEN OR DAMAGE WILL OCCUR TO STABILATOR
